I am sure that by now you have heard all about the Goat Project at Taylor Evans P.S. Our Me-to-We inspired event this year is to buy goats for families in China. We managed to raise the money to buy a well over the past couple of years and this fund-raising will extend our efforts. Our class has brainstormed many creative ways to make some money. We will be sharing them with you over the next few weeks in our planners. One goat cost $50.00. Tax receipts are available for donations over $20 if you would like to support our project at your work place or home.
What have we been up to lately?
Well, in Math we are currently learning about money. Practicing counting coins with your child at home is a great way to support the learning in the classroom. Today we also logged into our new math program called Dreambox. You will receive a letter about this so that you can have your child work on the program at home as well. We are also spending a lot of time on place value and problem solving. The students are becoming very adept at developing a strategy to solve a problem.
In Language, we have been exploring non-fiction text by reading several stories about Ancient Egypt. As well, we have been making predictions during our reading of fiction text. The students have been doing some non-fiction writing and learning about opinion writing.
In Social Studies we have received some YouTube videos from our Australian buddies and learned a few facts about Australia. We have to send them a video back and tell them some details about life in Canada.
Last week, we learned about maple syrup and how it is made. We had a "cooking show" and Mrs. Kelterborn, Mrs. Coniglio and I made pancakes so that we could all have a taste of maple syrup; truly Ontario in the spring!
Another sign of spring is the mud on our field! Students may want to wear rubber boots if they have them. Soon we will be able to get back on the creative playground and skip on the tarmac.
Just a reminder that April 2 is Autism Awareness Day. Students are encouraged to wear blue. Many of the world's largest landmarks will be lit in blue in recognition of autism. We plan to take a look at the Great Pyramid!
Have a wonderful long weekend. Remember there is no school on Friday or Monday.
